Judy Greenleaf has retired before from the Alna town office. This time, she really means it, the former Alna town clerk said Friday, her last day as deputy town clerk. “It’s time,” she said.

She only wanted to keep doing it as long as she was doing it well, Greenleaf said in an interview at the town office. In her resignation letter to selectmen, Greenleaf said she’s been making mistakes too often to suit her. “I would like to leave on good terms, because I did a good job for over 20 years ... I know when it is time to go,” she wrote.

Now she will have more time to visit with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she said Friday. She has enough of them to keep her busy, she said.

Greenleaf announced her retirement near the time First Selectman David Abbott confirmed he would not seek re-election in March. The two were born the same day at Miles Hospital in Damariscotta, but they said they didn't meet until they attended Wiscasset High School because Greenleaf had attended her younger grades in Alna. They graduated fom WHS in 1964.

Abbott said in a phone interview Sunday, he will miss seeing Greenleaf every week. As clerk and later deputy clerk, she was a loyal worker and easy to get along with, Abbott said. 

Town Clerk Liz Brown, working with Greenleaf Friday, said, “She will be missed. She really will.”

Formet Alna town clerk Lisa Arsensault was set to start work as deputy clerk the week of Jan. 1, Brown said.
