Jean Kigel's watercolors at River Arts West
The sometimes whimsical, sometimes delicate art of Jean Kigel will be displayed through August 14 at the River Arts West Gallery in North Damariscotta. The public is invited to the opening reception of Kigel’s work, "15th Annual Eastern Views: Recent Asian Brush and Watercolor," on Friday, August 2, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Kigel’s signature work, “Homarus Lafite Rothschild 1961” represents her playful side, following in her tradition of painting the iconic lobster. Over the years Kigel has painted more than 30 lobsters, selling them through Woodward Gallery in Manhattan, Hunter Gallery in Grafton, Vermont, and Archipelago in Rockland.
Kigel also depicts the coast of Maine with scenes painted during her kayak excursions. New this year are fresco liquid tempera paintings from her Bowdoin pine series.
In these paintings Kigel uses richly saturated colors and layered textures combining techniques of Asian brush and watercolors.
Kigel’s gyotaku fish prints, as featured in Down East Magazine will also be represented. You’ll also see her Tao-istic birds and flowers in her wabi-sabi, Asian brush style.
River Arts Gallery West is located at 241 Route 1. Open hours are daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call the gallery at 207-563-1507 or Jean at 207-832-5152, or visit the websites www.artcollectormaine.com and www.jeankigel.com.
