Joanne Demers
Joanne Demers (née Haagen-Smit) died peacefully on Sept. 11, 2020 at her cottage in East Boothbay at the age of 67.
Joanne was born on Nov. 1, 1952 in Pasadena, California to Arie and Maria Haagen-Smit. She first arrived in the Boothbay region at the age of 13 where she instantly fell in love with the area. After studying engineering in college she moved to Massachusetts where she raised her two sons. Later Joanne moved to East Boothbay as a retired school librarian. She dedicated her remaining time to volunteer work at the local thrift store and providing meals through the Meals on Wheels program. Those that knew her could expect to be greeted by her golden retrievers, a series of constant companions in her life for over 40 years.
Joanne is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Maria and Tom Daniel of Rio Rico, Arizona; her son and daughter-in-law, Devin and Rachel Demers of Baltimore, Maryland; her son and daughter-in-law, Dierk and Elaine Demers of Peekskill, New York; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
Per Joanne's request, there will be no services. Her family welcomes well wishers to celebrate Joanne's love of animals by donating to the Midcoast Humane, 190 Pleasant St., Brunswick, ME 04011, in her name.
