John P. McCormack
John Patrick McCormack, 74, died June 23, 2013 at Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn surrounded by his family.
He was born in New York City, N.Y., on November 8, 1938, to James and Mary Ellen McCormack. Early on the family moved to Brooklyn, NY., where John attended St. Theresa of Avila School and Brooklyn Tech, class of 1956. He went on to Ramapo College of New Jersey, in Mahwah. To complete his education, John received a master's degree from Columbia University in New York. He began working for the New York Telephone Company and remained there for 30 years. John went on to work for AT&T for 10 years, retiring as a human resources manager.
John was always had ties to Maine and enjoyed renting summer cottages for many years. Fifteen years ago he made it permanent, moving to Boothbay Harbor and calling it home.
Over the years John made many contributions to the community and was active with the Knights of Columbus, gave his time driving for “FISH” and Meals on Wheels and was an active member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, where he was a head usher.
He was the past president of the Kiwanis Club in New York, as well as the Columbia Club in New York. You could always find John helping behind the scenes. He also was a former member of the Ardsley Curling Club in New York.
John loved all things Irish, especially the music and reading about the history of Ireland. He was an avid reader, especially American and Irish history and mysteries. He was famous for doing both the Wall Street Journal and New York Times Crosswords and had no problem doing both in pen.
He developed a love for gardening and was a huge dog lover, especially when it came to his buddy “Jake” that he enjoyed for 16 years before his passing in January.
John will be remembered for being witty, generous, giving, a true Patriot and definitely Brooklyn Proud (as only a New Yorker can be!) He was a loving and caring father. He will be sadly missed and dearly remembered.
He was predeceased by his Auntie Della Gibbons, and his parent James and Mary Ellen McCormack.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Locke and her partner Allan Corns, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Kathleen’s mother, Catherine McCormack; wife, Jane McCormack; sister, Mary and husband Jimmy Paul; brother, Jimmy and wife Patricia McCormack; grandchildren, Frances Locke, Caitlin Locke, Virginia Goss, and four great-grandchildren.
