John Vander's new works at Gold/Smith Gallery
Gold/Smith Gallery is featuring new paintings by John Vander through October. The exhibit is about places Vander has visited in the last two years. Tuscany, Key West and New York City are a few of his “touch down” subjects.
The works are collage and mixed media, rich and vibrant as the places themselves. Vander divides his time between Maine and Tuscany and his paintings make liberal reference to that fact. But Vander is not a one-trick pony. He travels and records very place he touches down. He is an elegant draftsman.
There is an fluid quality to his drawings that animates his work. His work takes the form of landscapes and, within that purview, architecture can play a primary role. But whether primary or not, the artist extracts elements and reconstructs them into forms representing emotional experience. It is a beautifully accomplished undertaking.
Gold/Smith Gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call 207-633-6252.
