Join KELT to learn about local ferns Sept. 9
The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) invites curious observers of nature to join a walk to discover the ferns of Merrymeeting Fields Preserve in Woolwich on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 9 a.m. Part of KELT's Unassuming Undergrowth series, join Maine Master Naturalist volunteer Richard Brown to uncover the world of these often overlooked flowerless, seedless plants. This free event is geared for adults and children 10 years old and older.
Ferns are a common sight in the woods and fields of Maine, and the preserve boasts both types of habitats. Brown will lead hikers throughout the preserve looking for and identifying common fern species, like the interrupted fern, lady fern, and cinnamon fern. Participants will learn to ‘read’ the fern’s frond (or leaf) to get important clues for identification, to observe the variety of mechanisms ferns employ to disperse their spores (reproductive bodies), and to discover the ferns’ role in a forest or field habitat. The walk will include helpful handouts to take home and tips to encourage ferns to take root in your own backyard.
This is a light rain or shine event and registration is strongly encouraged at www.kennebecestuary.org/unassuming-undergrowth or 207-442-8400 due to a limited class size. The Unassuming Undergrowth series was generously sponsored by the Merrymeeting Bay Trust, The Nature Conservancy, and Bath Savings Trust Company.
