Juniors attending Dirigo Boys and Girls State
Dirigo Girls State, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, is being held at Husson University in Bangor June 19-24. Junior girls are selected by faculty vote based on potential for leadership, characteristics of good citizenship, academic skills, community service, and high school activities. This year Jenna Bickford, daughter of Robert and Janet Bickford of Wiscasset, and Skyler Stickney, daughter of Loretta Perkins of Wiscasset, are representing Wiscasset Middle High School.
Dirigo Boys State, sponsored by the American Legion, is being held at Thomas College in Waterville June 19-23. Junior boys are also selected by faculty vote based on qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, and loyalty and service to their school. The WHMS boys attending Boys State this year are Brandon Goud, son of Duane and Patricia Goud of Wiscasset, and Conlon Ranta of Alna, son of Richard Ranta and Tamlyn McNelly.
Boys and Girls State are week long summer programs for rising high school seniors. Both programs focus on a model state complete with governmental bodies and elected public officials. The programs are designed to mirror the structure and operation of its respective state government while providing training in citizenship, leadership and character development through a non-partisan perspective.
