Juniper Hill School emphasizes early education
Juniper Hill School for Place-based Education, in Alna, is one of the first of its kind—a school that connects children to themselves, to each other, and to their communities through studying both natural and human environments. The surrounding fields, woods, and river and the local communities serve as the primary classrooms and springboards for a curriculum that synthesizes the best of 20th century progressive education, with a 21st century place-based approach.
Director Anne Stires announces that Juniper Hill School for Place-based Education will be focusing on the education of 3-7 year-olds in three different classes. Located on a 42-acre, 18th century farm along the Sheepscot River, the school is offering its three foundational programs for the school year beginning in September 2015. The classes consist of a one or two day immersion program for 3 and 4 year olds emphasizing a nature-based preschool design; a three or five day pre-kindergarten program for 4 and 5 year olds akin to a traditional forest kindergarten; and a five day place-based elementary kindergarten and first grade program for 5 to 7 year olds, where the students study their immediate environment, along with an early academic course of study. All three classes are considered part of Juniper Hill's Nature-Based Early Childhood Center.
The school will continue to accept enrollment applications on a rolling basis, until full, for the 2015-16 school year in all the programs.
