Dear Editor:

The Cemetery Committee was directed by the Select Board to recommend a design of a new fence and sign. The Board voted to use that chosen recommendation for the fence and to use designated funds from the Cemetery Perpetual Care account, which does not include any tax money. This account is for maintenance of cemeteries, which includes replacement of a fence. The town had previously approved this spending.

The Cemetery Perpetual Care account currently has $2,603,366.

The money for a sign and two benches would come from the Cemetery Plot Sales account. The article on the Aug. 31 special town meeting warrant is a vote to allow the use of this money. Because the sign and benches would be new, a vote to use this account money requires a public vote. Likewise, the Plot Sales does not include any tax money.

The Cemetery Plot Sales account currently has $142,163.
