Kay Miller exhibits at Miles Memorial Hospital
Miles Memorial Hospital is showing Kay Miller’s artwork now through Jan. 2. All the work is for sale with a portion going to the hospital.
Miller began her formal art exploration, primarily watercolors, by taking adult education classes in Concord, New Hampshire. A teaching career took her traveling throughout the world, and she took her art interest with her.
“Art has always been with me, it connects all the places I’ve been. Walking outdoors brings me closer to nature and makes my botanical monotypes come alive,” Miller said.
While returning home after a teaching stint in England, her tubes of watercolor were thoroughly inspected at Heathrow Airport. After that experience, she thought it a good idea to use a more portable art medium, especially one that didn’t X-ray like explosives.
A box of pastels and a sketch pad traveled well in a backpack for the following years as she taught in Mexico, Singapore and Kyrgyzstan. In Singapore, Miller took oriental brush painting, which she continued with Jean Keogle at Round Top Center for the Arts in Damariscotta.
After retiring to South Bristol in 2000, she began taking classes at Round Top and became especially interest in various printing methods after taking classes with Frances Hodsdon, Lois Ann, Lee Nesler and Paulette Gnidziejko.
Miller is on the board and teaches at the Midcoast Printmakers studio at 648 Main Street in Damariscotta.
For the past several years, Miller has been in the National Small Print Exhibition in Creede, Colorado. Her work has been seen at UM/Hutchinson Center, the Chocolate Church Arty Gallery in Bath, CMCA in Rockport for the Maine Print Project, The First Bank, PWA, Gifts in Damariscotta, Round Top Center for the Arts, Boothbay Region Art Foundation in Boothbay, Camden Library and the Saltwater Artists Gallery in Pemaquid.
Miles Memorial Hospital is located at 35 Miles Road, off the Bristol Road in Damariscotta.
