Last chowder supper of the season at St. Philip's Aug. 13
Rounding out the summer season, St. Philip's Church, 12 Hodge St., Wiscasset, will host its third and final haddock chowder supper on Saturday, Aug. 13, with seatings from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The family friendly charge is $10 for an adult and $5 for a child 12 and under.
The menu includes a freshly made, steaming bowl of haddock chowder; tossed, pasta, and bean salads; corn and French breads; a dessert table replete with many mouth watering homemade cakes, shortcakes, pies, cookies, and such; rounded out with a choice of beverage, including iced tea, lemonade, and coffee. Vegan hot dogs and vegetable soup are also available for the non-chowder consuming family members.
While there, check out the raffle of a wonderful, totally handmade quilt donated by award-winning quilter and St. Philip's member, Helene Gillhooley. Consider purchasing chances, $1 per chance and six chances for $5 for the possibility of winning the lovely coverlet. A matching grant awarded to St. Philip's by the Maine Community Foundation to restore the church's beautiful and historic spire is the motivation for Gilhooley's gift, so the purchase of those chances will help ensure the steeple reaches to the sky for generations to come.
The funds generated from the chowder event are applied to the support of the church and its outreach missions. The Help Yourself Shelf Food Pantry has for many years been a place where anyone suffering food insecurity can access needed supplies each Thursday afternoon. An arm of that program is the Feed Our Scholars Backpack Initiative that supplies weekend packs of food to students attending Wiscasset Elementary School during the school year, as well as supporting the School Pantry located at Wiscasset Middle High School and available to students and their families, also during the school year.
The Bargain Basement, housed in the cellar of the church complex, is a year-round favorite of those seeking good deals on clothes and housewares. Importantly, it is also a place where people experiencing emergencies such as a house fire can fit themselves out for little or no money.
So feel virtuous while consuming a scrumptious meal of St. Philip's world famous chowder and fixings. For more information or to make reservations — not necessary but appreciated — please call 882-7184. Leave a name and phone number along with a brief message, and someone will respond to verify.
