Late-night lobster and more
Pop quiz: It's 10 p.m. on a Saturday night and you're just coming into Boothbay after a long drive. You're hungry and want to grab a bite. Where do you go? Everything's closed, right?
Not everything! You can stop at 716 Wiscasset Road, at the head of Adam's Pond on the way into town. There, next to Maniac Lobster, sits Karen's Hideaway Snack Shack.
Open seven days at week, Karen Blackman runs the Hideaway with help from her husband Garry and 15-year-old grandson, Zachary, who, according to Blackman, is “becoming quite an accomplished cook.”
“We're open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday we're open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.,” said Karen Blackman. “Every night this week, Chris Gistis (otherwise known as Mr. C) has come up around 10 p.m. for a fresh crabmeat roll.”
Also available at the Hideaway is a twin lobster special with an ear of corn for $12.95, which Blackman steams in ocean water, and lobster rolls for $9, featuring five ounces of fresh-picked meat.
She also has specials for the non-seafood lovers, including hamburgers, chicken and steak bombs, and the “Derby Special,” more commonly known as a PB&J, named after a family friend. Sandwiches come with chips and a big pickle. Baskets have fries and your choice of coleslaw, macaroni salad or pasta salad.
“It's a place people can bring the whole family and not break the bank. Our prices are very reasonable,” said Blackman.
One particular treat that has received a lot of notice is Karen's strawberry shortcake special, complete with a toasted homemade biscuit.
“Can't keep it in stock,” Blackman said. “People are loving it!”
The shack's sign depicts Karen holding a spatula and hiding behind a garden fence with Garry dressed in a white tank top. It was painted by Chip Sample, one of Blackman's “KP Kids” from her old Knights of Pythias groups she used to run.
The name of the shack comes from a small vegetable and homemade goodies stand previously owned by Karen's mother, who was assisted by 8-year-old Blackman.
“It's a tribute to a very special memory of my mom,” Blackman said.
People are starting to notice the snack shack, and word of mouth is bringing in new customers every day. Last week, a couple from New York stopped by. After getting a couple of lobster rolls, the gentleman asked if he could take some pictures.
“Apparently, he was a food critic,” Blackman said. “He asked me, 'How would you like to be just as busy as Red's Eats? You're just as good, if not better.' It was so rewarding to hear that.”
