Lincoln County Republicans award two Helen Weston scholarships
Helen Weston was the first woman to serve as a Lincoln County Commissioner. She died while serving in office. Her husband, George Weston, established a scholarship fund in her memory and started giving awards of the interest monies in 1991. The award is given to a deserving student from Lincoln County who shows an interest in government and/or politics. The board has not always been able to make awards each year due to low interest returns, but with the recent market resurgence, county Republicans approved two awards this year to deserving students.
The Lincoln County Republican Committee (LCRC) announced the 2017 winners at its monthly meeting, June 28 at the Newcastle Community Center. From many outstanding applicants, the board awarded $500 scholarships to two National Honor Society graduates, Kathryne Friant of Boothbay Harbor and Stephanie Jones of Westport Island. Friant is a graduate of Boothbay Region High School and will be attending the University of Southern California in the fall. Jones is a graduate of Wiscasset Middle High School and will enter Central Maine Community College this fall.
The Helen Weston Scholarship Fund has been under the stewardship of the LCRC with an elected board serving to represent the secondary schools of Lincoln County continuously since 1991. With the 2017 awards, LCRC has awarded 16 scholarships to deserving students of Lincoln County since the fund's inception.
