Linwood Bailey named Alna's Spirit of America winner
Alna's Linwood Bailey has been named to another posthumous honor. This year's town report in March was dedicated to him, and now selectmen have picked him for the Spirit of America community service award.
A Spirit of America representative met with the board September 5; he has been making the rounds to towns with no honorees yet for this year.
Selectmen also decided that from now on, they'll have the Spirit of America honoree be the same person or group they dedicate the town report to. That will leave just one such decision to make each year, they said.
Bailey served as a selectman, school committee member and cemetery trustee. He died in May 2012.
“He was a very honest, hardworking man (who) always tried to do what was right, and in the best interest of the people he represented,” the town report states.
The Spirit of America Foundation formed in Augusta in 1990, to honor volunteerism, according to the foundation's website at www.spiroaf.com.
