A little rain, then sun for Wiscasset Art Walk
The second Wiscasset Art Walk of the summer went on as planned Thursday, July 27. A thunderstorm arrived as predicted at 5 p.m. but quickly passed and the sun returned. “It just goes to prove the old New England saying, if you don’t like the weather just wait a few minutes,” said Heather MacLeod, who was playing the flute outside Treats on the corner of Main and Middle streets.
This is MacLeod’s third year playing the art walk. A retired music teacher, MacLeod told Wiscasset Newspaper she taught for 22 years in the Brewer school district and now makes her home in Topsham. When not performing solo MacLeod plays with the Crow’s Nest, a four-piece Celtic band.
Behind a table next to her was Wiscasset’s Claudia Sortwell. She was offering samples of artician jellies for sale and jars of freshly roasted coffee made by her husband Dan Sortwell of Big Barn Coffee Company. Nearby were Selectman Terry Heller and Diane Morrison and Jan Flowers. They were in charge of the Garden Club’s table brimming with colorful floral arrangements of red, blue, yellow and purple. “A little rain is always good for the flowers,” said Heller.
Lucia Droby, one of the event’s organizers, said the forecasted thunderstorm had forced a few minor changes. “Stacy Linehan, the owner of Treats, very generously offered to let us use the vacant store next door to her business allowing some of the articians and other art walk participants to set up their tables inside,” she said. Among those were Grace Greene and her mother Susan Greene of Wiscasset. Grace who will be a senior at Wiscasset Middle High School in September was selling her original t-shirts, canvas patches and artwork.
Nancy Roby and Martha Speed were also indoors selling gifts made by members of First Congregational Church UCC of Wiscasset which is celebrating its 250th anniversary this summer. Also present were Friends of the Wiscasset Library.
By 6 p.m. the sun was shining again and the streets had mostly dried. The evening ended with a beautiful golden sunset. The next Wiscasset Art Walk is Aug. 31. The Sept. 28 event will feature an outdoor dance party with live music provided by the contra band, T-Acadie.
