Lobstermobile sells local fare
Warren Hewes of Phippsburg is leasing Linda Bean's Lobstermobile for a little while to help him sell their Orr's Island Seafood Chowder.
Through the remainder of this summer and dipping into the fall, Hewes and his girlfriend Jenny Disanto will sell chowder, lobster rolls and other foods from the mobile unit parked next to the Birch Point Road on Route 1 in Wiscasset.
“We hope to sell our chowder through her restaurants,” Disanto said.
She and Hewes have taken time off from their full-time jobs to sell their trademark chowder, which is also available at the Meadowbrook Camping Area.
Hewes also planned to take a tour to the Dooryard Fest in Poland Springs, the Lobster Festival and the Maine Boats, Homes and Harbor show in Rockland, and the Bangor Folk Festival, using one of his own trailers.
Warren said he took over responsibilities of the seafood chowder company last year, after having worked there for some 13 years. His partner Roger Michaud retired and let Hewes take over.
“We used to make it ourselves,” Warren said, but added they can sell as much as 107 gallons in a day. They average between 20 and 30 gallons of soup sold on a daily basis.
Such a large volume required Hewes to hire Kettle Cuisine, a company he said sticks to the recipe. The Lobstermobile will be in its current location until Oct. 14.
