Lois A. Lowans
Lois A. (McLellan) Lowans, 89, of Augusta, Maine and Estero, Florida, died June 11, 2017 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation, Graybirch Drive in Augusta.
She was born in Bath August 6, 1927 the only daughter of Albert and Dorothy (Campbell) McLellan. She grew up and was educated in Bath and, during World War II, she worked in the canteen at Bath Iron Works where she met her husband, William when his Destroyer, the USS Knapp was being built. They knew each other for three weeks when he was shipped out to the South Pacific and they corresponded for 18 months. Upon his return, they were married and were together for 59 ½ years.
Lois worked for 14 years at LaVerdiere’s Drug Store on Water Street in Augusta and then at Augusta General Hospital for 29 years as a ward clerk. Lois was a living testament to the toughness of a Maine woman. She was a breast cancer survivor, had a heart condition, multiple fractures, hip and knee replacements, and diabetes and survived them all, determined not to give up.
She enjoyed her grandchildren and pets and her camp on Moosehead Lake and winter home in Estero, Florida.
Lois was predeceased by her husband, Bill in 2004; her parents; her brothers, Robert and Phillip McLellan and her son-in-law, Robert LaGuardia.
She is survived by her son, William Lowans and his wife, Deborah, of Randolph and Estero, Florida; her daughters, Suzanne C. LaGuardia, of Randolph and Estero, Florida and Catherine Plouff and her husband, Jeffrey, of Woolwich; six grandchildren, Michelle, Gina, Michael, Christina, Jennifer, and Erin; seven great-grandchildren, Lauren, Ryan, Thomas, Caleb, Frank. Adeline, and Henry; her brothers, Roland McLellan. Myron McLellan and his wife Barbara, and Richard McLellan and his companion Nancy, all of Boothbay as well as many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road in Augusta, Friday June 23 at 9 a.m.
