Mac's is new in town
Latte lovers and cappuccino cravers, rejoice. Healthy eaters and gelato junkies, you, too. There's a new place to check out in Wiscasset Village, just in time for the Fourth of July.
Karen McDorr of West Bath owns Mac's Place at 75 Main St. and runs it with her children Alex and Danielle Sylvain. The business' name honors McDorr's parents: her father's nickname in the military was “Mac”; McDorr's mother's surname was MacGillivary.
Wiscasset officials welcomed the indoor-outdoor cafe and takeout business into the local economic fold with a ribbon-cutting July 1.
“We're excited that you chose Wiscasset for your business,” Selectmen's Chairman Ed Polewarczyk told McDorr.
McDorr began looking for just the right place a couple years ago, starting around the Bath-Brunswick area.
“I just saw so much potential in Wiscasset, to give an alternative choice, something a little different for people to stop at,” she said.
McDorr is a first-time business owner, with a background in management and accounting. Her prior work for a company that makes and services cappuccino machines could also come in handy.
The fanfare of Monday's ribbon-cutting came nearly a month after a quiet opening that McDorr said has helped the family hone the day-to-day operation.
The menu includes mini tuna and crabmeat rolls, salads and a daily soup, along with gluten-free offerings like pastries and gelato. Both the cappuccino and latte can be prepared with soy, McDorr said.
Suzanne Rankin of Wiscasset was already back for a second visit. She first stopped by in late June for coffee and carrot cake. “It was delicious. And everybody was charming,” she said. “Sometimes, you just want to have a little coffee and something yummy, so this is great. I hope they do wonderful business.”
Mac's Place opens at 7 a.m. seven days a week. It closes at 6:30 p.m., except for a 1 p.m. closing on Tuesdays. The business is on Facebook.
