Make greeting cards for U.S. troops
The June meeting of Maine Media Women will take an unusual turn when the group meets to make greeting cards for distribution to U.S. servicemen and women overseas.
One does not have to be an artist to make these collage-style cards, and the meeting is open to anyone who wishes to participate in this activity.
The event will take place on Saturday, June 1 at the Mobius Center on Business Route 1 in Damariscotta from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. The regular meeting fees ($3 for MMW members and $5 for non-members) will be used to defray the cost of materials.
MMW member Carol Jaeger will be coaching the group in how to decorate the cards. Paper and other materials are being provided by Jaeger’s business, Salt Bay Art Supply in Damariscotta, and by Phyllis Milstead, coordinator of the local branch of From Our Hearts.
FOH is a nationwide volunteer organization that makes and ships cards to the troops several times a year. “Each card is sent by a soldier to a loved one or friend, touching the lives of both the troops and their families back home,” Milstead said.
“This seemed like a wonderful way to conclude our year of media- and communications-related programs,” said Genie Dailey, President of Maine Media Women. “The fact that most, if not all, of the cards we make will soon be in the hands of our troops far from home gives a special meaning to the communication aspect of our work.”
