March
Could this be spring?
The snow is slipping away. The shadows are deeper and there's greening in the grass. It's beginning to feel a little different.
Or is this just pretend, with more winter to come?
I'm afraid to guess. March is a tricky month here in Maine and along the coast. A little less wintery would be nice. I suspect we are all looking forward to warmer days, shorter nights and stronger sun.
The wood pile is dwindling and being stretched, but there is beautiful bright light coming in the east and southeast windows that really helps chase the morning chill. Our old geranium house plants are starting to rev up and a pileated woodpecker delivers a jackhammer assault at daybreak on a hollow spruce next to the barn.
Springlike things are appearing, but I am resisting major enthusiasm for the new season. Call it old age, seasonal reluctance disorder (SRD), or just plain experience. I know it says spring on the calendar, but my bad weather knee is acting up.
We can only wait and see. I'm hopeful, but I've not put the snow shovels back in the shed yet.
