MDOT proposes improvements to Wiscasset intersections
Wiscasset selectmen entered into two cooperative agreements with the Maine Department of Transportation for proposed road improvements for both the north and south intersections of routes 1 and 144. The board Tuesday night authorized the town manager to sign off on the paperwork.
According to the terms, the town’s share of the construction costs will be just under $104,000. State and federal highway monies are paying the rest. The estimated cost of the projects, including engineering is $405,000. The town’s share will come from impact fees carried forward since 2010.
The work would add turning lanes and street islands at both intersections. One intersection is at Birch Point Road. The other is near Norm’s Used Cars.
The proposed routes 1 and 144 (Birch Point Road) work includes constructing a left turn lane on Route 1 in the southbound lane and adding painted, traffic “channelization islands” in both directions. MDOT estimates the cost at $200,000; the town’s share is $53,844.
Improvements at the other intersection south of town are similar. MDOT proposes adding a left turn lane in the southbound lane at the intersection of routes 1 and 144 (Old Ferry Road). Channelization islands are planned here as well also, in both directions. The town’s share is $50,000.
MDOT will seek public input for both projects, although no date was given when an informational hearing might be held.
