Mini golf at Wiscasset Public Library
Wiscasset Public Library (WPL) set up mini-golf holes around the stacks for September. Librarian Lindsey Carnes reached out to the Friends of WPL, asking them to purchase six holes to be placed throughout the stacks and two members immediately stepped forward.
The idea stemmed from September being library card sign-up month and Carnes knew that teachers were coming in with classes to explore the library. She felt this would be a fun way to learn the stacks, pick up a library card, and celebrate September as the official mini-golf month.
Carnes created WPL Country Club flags and scorecards. The Friends of WPL donated brand-new golf towels, foam golf balls, and pencils making the Circulation Desk entrance look like a PGA pro shop! Carnes relayed, "I knew it would be a hit with teens and kids, I had no idea how large of an impact and positive impression it would make on all our patrons. We even had some pretty competitive adults playing."
The activity is continuing. Carnes has ordered 10 large inflatable witches’ hats with rings for people to play throughout the library. Patrons who finish all 10 tosses around the stacks will be rewarded with spider rings. She ordered 154 spider rings, hoping that would be enough. "Mini golf was so busy, we had a few folks using canes because we ran out of putters. I was informed by a patron that canes are superior because they're ideal for retrieving the ball! I love our patrons and Friends of WPL, they are the absolute best." WPL hopes to see everyone gaming around the stacks.
