Monhegan
Every time we visit Monhegan Island there is something new to discover.
Our family members save nickels, dimes, quarters, returnable “CLYNK” money and tooth fairy deposits for a wonderful week rental at the Wik Wak cottage on the western shore overlooking Manana Island. It’s our bliss refill.
This year we encountered a few more obstacles to our visit which required some travel adjustments and postponed departures. Fortunately the folks at Balmy Days cruises could not have been more accommodating, despite the challenges of limited seating during the COVID-19 situation. Their boats have all been restricted to fewer passengers much the same as restaurants must serve fewer guests. We were very grateful for their willingness to help us get down to the Island for our cherished family gathering.
The week was filled with long hikes, sunrise viewing, picnics on the cliffs, visits with Lisa Bracket, Fish Beach wading and night time star lit skies of mind blowing brilliance. With no street lights, the night sky is breathtakingly beautiful. The Big Dipper, Orion, shooting stars, the works. Accented by the occasional sweeping beam from the lighthouse.
The weather was also quite fascinating including this week’s above noted view from the cottage. The sunsets from the Wik Wak cottage provide endless entertainment. This time of year the sky show is focused right over New Harbor at about 7:30 to 8 p.m. We all gather on the porch to watch prior to an evening game of “chicken foot” dominoes.
One of our other most meaningful visits is with old friends who also loved the island but no longer make the trip. Our buddy Keith from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, traverses the cliffs off White Head and good friend Dominic Garvey stills conducts a symphony at Lobster Cove. Please stop by and say hello if you visit. Dominic used to stay on the Balmy Days to read The NY Times, do the crossword puzzle and nap during the layover until departure back to Boothbay Harbor.
The island is being very careful with COVID-19. Masks are required in the Village and when passing others on trails. People are careful and adjusting. Keeping everyone safe is paramount. In spite of all the precautions, we were blessed and thankful for our time together on the magical isle.
Thank you Monhegan. We'll be back.
