Neera Harmon brings wealth of experience to Wiscasset Primary School
Neera Harmon was a school counselor at Hussey Elementary School in Augusta for nine years before taking her new position as school counselor of the Wiscasset Primary School.
Originally from Vermont and New Hampshire, Harmon lived in Steamboat Springs, Colorado before moving to Maine 10 years ago.
She earned a master’s degree in counseling psychology at the University of Colorado in Denver.
Harmon, 48, said she moved to Bath with her husband and 10 year-old daughter when her husband took the job of director of the Maine chapter of the Nature Conservancy, based in Brunswick.
She said she left the Augusta school system and took the job at the Wiscasset school to be closer to her home in Bath, and because she had heard great things about the Wiscasset Public School system.
“We landed in Bath because we found and amazing house on the Winnegance Lake,” she said. “What else could one possibly want.”
“I'm also looking forward (because I'm closer) to being more integrated with the school community.”
Wiscasset Primary School Principal Mona Schlein said Harmon is a great fit.
“She's very experienced and she brings a wealth of experience to the school,” Schlein said. “She has been welcoming staff and students into her office and they have been getting to know her. She's letting the students know what a counselor does. We're very luck to have her.”
Harmon's life outside of school includes cross-country skiing, playing soccer and running. Her hobbies are gardening, reading, and fostering dogs for Beau Buddy Rescue in Bath.
New responsibilities for Harmon include teaching classroom lessons, running groups and seeing individual children as needed.
