“From Shore to Shore: Select American and European Coastal Paintings” opens at the Wiscasset Bay Gallery on Saturday, Sept. 28.

The exhibition explores a broad range of marine art from the highly detailed work of the 19th century to early 20th century impressionism to the social realism of the 1930’s and 1940’s. It will run through October 31.

Among the featured works is a richly painted gouache by Frederick Leonard King (American, 1879-1947) depicting a Cape Cod fisherman surrounded by his nets and gear with Chatham Harbor in the background. Frederick King exhibited in numerous artist societies and museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the National Academy of Design; and the Rockport Art Association. His murals are in the collection of the Boston Public Library.

Stow Wengenroth, another Rockport artist active in the 1930’s and 40’s, spent a large portion of his time on the Maine coast capturing the shore life and lobstermen at work. The show includes three fine examples of Wengenroth’s lithography from Port Clyde to Winter Harbor.

Nineteenth century Australian artist Temple West (fl. 1880s-1900) is featured with a schooner under full sail on the high seas. Other noted 19th century marine painters on display include Charles A. Watson (American, 1857-1923), William A. Coulter (American, 1849-1936), and Walter Lofthouse Dean (American, 1854-1912).

In addition to the marine show, the Wiscasset Bay Gallery will be exhibiting watercolors and drawings from the Zorach estate, with nudes and landscapes by both William and Marguerite Zorach. New works by artists Judith Magyar, David Kasman, Guy Corriero, Keith Oehmig, Roberta Goschke, Mike Graves and Carlton Plummer will be on exhibition in the contemporary galleries.
