‘New Work: Greto-Brunner and LeVasseur’ at River Arts
River Arts is pleased to announce the opening of "New Work: Greto-Brunner and LeVasseur” May 9 in the River Room. Artists, Mary Greto-Brunner and Joël LeVasseur have combined their talents in a thought provoking show bound to intrigue and delight viewers. The show will run May 9 through May 29. Meet the artists at the opening reception on Saturday, May 11 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Mary Greto-Brunner, a semi-abstract artist, blends paint and mixed media, drawing inspiration from fashion, interiors, and landscapes. Her intuitive process explores color, composition, and texture, often incorporating collage and photo transfers. Based in Southern Maine, Greto-Brunner’s diverse background in design influences her dynamic compositions, emphasizing geometric and biomorphic forms.
Throughout her career as a designer, Greto-Brunner has developed a keen eye for balanced and abstract compositions that serve as the foundation for her paintings. She introduces drama and depth through the skillful combination of texture, line, mark-making, washes, glazes, and collage. Greto-Brunner believes that the connection between the viewer and her art can be a profound and transformative experience.
LeVasseur, an Acadian environmental artist based in Damariscotta, explains he is driven by his heritage and the environmental changes he sees. His work reflects on human impact, loss of culture, and environmental degradation.
LeVasseur’s environmentally themed print work utilizes the gelatin printmaking method, he learned from Susan Webster at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Inspired by Midcoast Maine’s natural beauty, LeVasseur often uses materials from local beaches and parks, along with vintage paper.
Through the use of symbolism, LeVasseur aims to raise awareness and advocate for the urgent need for sustainable environmental practices. His art has been exhibited globally and collected by many notable figures.
