Newcastle selectmen have agreed to consider renaming Columbus Day, after this Columbus Day.

Selectman Joel Lind said Sept. 25 that as more recent revelations arise about Columbus’s contact with the new world, it has become clear that Columbus had virtually no redeeming qualities. Lind said he would support renaming the day to Indigenous People’s Day or something else that would celebrate local indigenous people. Lind brought the issue up after reading about Portland and Bangor changing the holiday’s name.

The discussion was tabled to the Oct. 23 meeting to give attorney Peter Drum a chance to review state law.
