Newcastle man indicted for allegedly attacking cyclist
A Newcastle man has been indicted by the Lincoln County Grand Jury on an aggravated assault charge stemming from an alleged nude attack of a bicyclist on a public road in Nobleboro.
David Gilbert, 54, of Newcastle, is being held on $100,000 bail and will undergo an evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial.
He faces one charge of aggravated assault.
The charge stems from an April 22 incident in which it's alleged that Gilbert was nude when he attacked a woman on a bicycle along Belvedere Road.
Motorists claimed to have seen Gilbert crouching along the roadway, praying before he allegedly punched the woman in the face and attempted to strangle her.
Damariscotta Police Officer Ryan Chubbuck had to use a Taser on Gilbert three times because the man was acting aggressive towards the police officer, according to reports.
Gilbert was finally apprehended on Belvedere Road in Nobleboro by Chubbuck and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
The woman was treated at Miles Memorial Hospital and had injuries to her neck and jaw.
According to reports, Gilbert stated that he blacked out during the incident and didn't remember any of it.
If found guilty, Gilbert could face up to 10 years in prison and or a $20,000 fine, as aggravated assault is a Class B crime in Maine.
