'Nocturne' at Maine Art Gallery until Oct. 20
The theme of Maine Art Gallery’s final show for the 2024 season, “Nocturne,” provided its curator Thomas Connolly with a treasure trove of work in many mediums and styles. The result is a collection of fine photography, paintings, and mixed media collages that should not be missed before the show closes on Sunday, Oct. 20.
Often considered to be coined by James Abbott McNeill Whistler in the 19th century, the painting style “Nocturne” describes scenes evocative of the night or subjects as they appear in a veil of light, in twilight, or in the absence of direct light. Photographers working in black and white were also particularly drawn to nighttime images. Photos by LIFE photographer from the 1950s, Kosti Ruohomaa (on loan from the Penobscot Marine Museum photography collection) are included in the show, along with stunning work by contemporary photographers David Etnier, Don Peterson, Jonathan Lavan, Alden Stickney, and Jim Nickelson.
Debra Arter, Kathy Bouchard, Mark Coates, Bernadette deCesare, Helen Fellows, Carolyn Gabbe, Frances Kornbluth, Ericka O’Rourke, Winslow Myers, Stephanie Pruzanski, Kathryn Shagas, and Joanne Tarlen are among the 52 artists in other mediums whose work is included in the show.
The gallery thanks season sponsor Sherri Dunbar of Tim Dunham Realty, capital sponsor Islebrook Villages at Wiscasset, and Nocturne exhibit sponsor J. Edward Knight Insurance.
