Patience and the pastor
Sometimes, some of the nicest story ideas take a while, weeks or longer, to become the stories you read in print and at wiscassetnewspaper.com and boothbayregister.com. We prioritize much of our work and print space based on what you need to know when, such as events, incidents and accidents.
So if an event is several weeks off, that press release may run online right away but surface in our print edition a subsequent week, so that we can first tell people whatever is happening sooner. As much as we encourage people to spend time on our websites, available 24/7, and to like or follow our Facebook pages and subscribe to our also free Morning Catch emails that come about 9 a.m. seven days a week, we respect that some readers prefer or only have easy access to our broadsheet paper.
There really is nothing like going through the big pages of a newspaper, kind of like going through, and going back through, a book, with paper pages to turn and put a real bookmark in, rather than it all being on a screen.
But unlike web, a print edition of a newspaper has just so much space. And because we are a local paper, with only so many staff and contributors, some features about someone’s livelihood, hobby, club, or cause have to wait for us to do the interviews and other legwork, and to write those stories. But we tend to find the people in those stories are fully patient. They understand, and are pleased we are working on it. Maybe it is because these stories tend to involve nice people, who understand things can take time and, with effort, will happen soon enough.
Case in point, St. Philip’s Episcopal Church’s priest-in charge Tom Junkert: He and I started talking in June about my interviewing him. The interview happened July 27; and finishing the story came nearly down to the wire of this week’s press time. Checking my work phone calendar, that is exactly three weeks since the interview. Thanks again for your patience, Tom Junkert.
Week’s positive parting thought: The wait is over. Wiscasset Schoonerfest is here at last, Aug. 18-22! Find more on our websites and wiscassetschoonerfest.com
