Pemaquid Chapter, DAR celebrates Christmas in Maine

The monthly meeting of the Pemaquid Chapter, NSDAR convened in the activity room of the Lincoln Home on Saturday, Dec. 7. At 11:20 a.m. Regent Miller called the meeting to order. Miriam Buckley, acting chaplain, opened the meeting with the ritual of the opening prayer, all reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, America’s Creed, the Preamble to the Constitution and singing the national anthem. Regent Miller welcomed guest Kasey Lambert.
Shirley Peverly read the President General’s message reporting a 2,000+ increase in DAR membership applications nationally so far this year. The national defense report reminded all present that 78 years ago, a surprise attack on the United States at Pearl Harbor claimed the lives of 2,335 service members and 68 civilians. Governor Mills directed that the flags be flown at half staff all day today.
Regent Miller reported that in recognition of the 200th Anniversary of Maine’s Statehood the Friends of Windjammer Days are raising money through various grants and donations to bring the Tall Ships America to Boothbay Harbor for Windjammer Days in 2020. Regent Miller, on behalf of the chapter, has provided a letter of support. Wreaths Across America’s traveling exhibit of which DAR is a national sponsor, will be at the Whale Park in Boothbay Harbor during the 2020 Windjammer Days. WWA stopped at Lincoln Academy on Dec. 8. Several daughters were in attendance.
In celebration of the Christmas season, each person present offered a favorite memory of Christmas which elicited much laughter. Quoting from a newsletter from the Harraseekett Inn, “the first Christmas in Maine took place on an island in 1604 with both a Catholic and Protestant celebration.” Christmas in Maine was not really celebrated again until 1858.
A four-foot Christmas tree was decorated and presented to the Lincoln Home for their library as a thank you for permitting the chapter to meet almost continuously since the 1930s. The meeting adjourned for a luncheon of clam chowder (made by Jeffrey Miller), assorted sandwiches, delicious blueberry cheesecake made by Sara Fahnley and a special Indian Pudding provided by Sue Hochstein.
