Photographer Lynette Gaslin is Artist Of The Month at Southport Library
Lynette Gaslin is a native of Maine. In 1978 she began her photographic journey while studying at Southern Maine Vocational Institute in South Portland. Aside from those early classes in black-and-white photography, and a few workshops over the years, she is a self-taught photographer.
Gaslin holds a degree in horticulture from the University of Maine at Orono, and her photography interest has been a constant throughout her horticultural career. In 1984, as Chief Horticulturalist for an estate on an island off the coast of Maine, the gardens under her care were awarded a Gold Medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society.
Gaslin's camera was in as much use as her garden tools during that era. In 1989, she began exhibiting and selling her work in both Maine and Massachusetts. Her work has also appeared in Horticulture magazine, where she worked several years as administrative assistant and as manager for their international garden tours program.
Coinciding with her horticulture endeavors, Gaslin was President of the Bucksport Garden Club from 2000 to 2006. She also has a Professional Floral Design certificate and has worked many summers for Island Flowers, which specializes in wedding designs using locally grown flowers.
As Gaslin's photography skills progressed, so did her photography equipment. Her beginning work-photographing flowers, scenery and animals-was produced with a SLR camera, a Pentax K1000, using Fuji print film and Kodak 64 slide film.
With the coming of digital age, Gaslin transitioned to photographing her favorite images with Nikon and Canon digital cameras and using Epson printers and papers. The work on display at the Southport Memorial Library represents her favorite subjects captured digitally over the past 10 years.
These large prints now on view were reproduced at Fahringer's Gallery in Ellsworth on an Epson 11880 printer, using Epson Enhanced Matte photo paper and archival pigment inks. Framing and finishing were done by the staff at the Belfast Framer in Belfast.
Gaslin resides on Verona Island with her husband Harold and their12-year old terrier/beagle. Here, they tend the many gardens on their property, where Lynette finds the majority of her photographic images.
Gaslin's show, “One Gardener's Obsession,” runs through June 29 at the Southport Library.
