‘PORTAL’: A historic look into a forgotten medium
Throughout the month of July, consider a cultural visit to the Boothbay Region Art Foundation’s second floor exhibit. Within the Harbor View gallery, Villard Studios offers a glimpse into the former art colony on Mt. Pisgah (Eastside, Boothbay Harbor), and the parallels of the American Woodblock printing technique; known as the Whiteline Print or Provincetown Print.
Be transported to the turn of the 20th century, a time prior to cars and television. When summer vacations brought teachers, students, families, and artists alike to the coast of Maine via steamship. Seeking ways to retreat from the city, many packed their bags and ventured north – finding entertainment and education within
the Art Colonies along the Eastern Seaboard.
Over the years, returning professors, motivated students and accreditations help to create the atmosphere we know and love here in Boothbay Harbor. Today, Maine’s creative economy speaks to the past and the future of this early luxury of time.
The show PORTAL is curated by Villard Studios, a local Woodblock Printing studio on Mt. Pisgah. As Art Colony keepers, they invite you to their mini-musée. This includes a peak into their collection of handmade works – The Boothbay Peninsula Environment Presented in Whiteline Color Woodblock Prints – bringing permanent representation of our region into the MoMA, New York City library.
