Putting up the flags
With a little luck, money and green lights, Damariscotta's downtown could be getting more colorful.
During the March 5 Damariscotta Board of Selectmen meeting, the board heard the American Legion's plan to hang flags from utility poles along Main Street.
Richard McFarland, speaking on behalf of the American Legion, said putting up the flags would reflect well on the Twin Villages.
The plan, McFarland said, is to have flags from the bridge downtown go all the way up to the American Legion. There would be 60 flags hung up and 75 in total, in case a flag ripped or was damaged.
The total for the flags would cruise north of $2,800, but luckily businesses are willing to help defer the costs, McFarland said.
“I want to raise the money (for the flags) by going to different businesses and seeing if they'll pitch in,” he said. “I've already had six businesses jump in.”
The hangup was over insurance, Damariscotta Town Manager Matt Lutkus said.
In the past, it was cost-prohibitive,” he said. “I talked with (Central Maine Power) and the (Maine Municipal Association) and Tidewater Telecom.”
Lutkus said he would look further into insurance costs to ensure that it would be feasible to hang the flags during the summertime.
In the interim, the board agreed, 4-0, to allow McFarland to continue to raise funds in anticipation of the flags going up.
