Route 1, Woolwich crash injures Westport Island woman
A car versus trailer truck crash injured one driver and snarled traffic on Route 1 in Woolwich near its northern intersection with George Wright Road at about 11:30 a.m. Monday. The tractor-trailer completely blocked the road for hours.
The tractor-trailer was traveling south on Route 1 toward Bath and the Ford Focus made a southerly turn from George Wright Road onto Route 1 into the path of the truck. The truck's driver, Peter Grinnell, 37, of Farmingdale, attempted to avoid the turning vehicle by pulling to the right, but struck guardrails and jack-knifed across the roadway. Grinnell was not hurt.
Gail MacLaren, 57, of Westport Island, was driving a 2009 Ford Focus. She had to be extricated from the car and was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing and alcohol is considered a factor, as well as road conditions which were partly snow covered. Evasive actions by the truck driver may have prevented more serious injuries.
Route 1 was completely closed to traffic for about three and a half hours, opening around 3 p.m. Traffic was rerouted for the duration of the rescue and cleanup.
The accident is being investigated by the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit.
Woolwich Fire Department and EMS and North East Mobile Health Services also assisted.
