Sale finalized for Mike’s Log Cabin
Mike’s Log Cabin on Wiscasset’s Gardiner Road is ringing in 2016 with new owners and a new name: Maxwell’s Market & Deli.
Rumors the popular Wiscasset convenience store had been sold have been circulating around town for more than a month. Two weeks ago, Shawn Barnes, who has managed the business for his father Bill Barnes, confirmed the transaction was in its final stages. The sale was completed on Monday morning, Jan. 25 when the parties gathered at the Waldoboro branch of The First.
The new owners are George Humphrey and his wife Samantha Humphrey. The couple isn’t new to the convenience store business; they owned and operated the Jefferson Market near the state park in Jefferson for 12 years before selling the business four and a half years ago.
Humphrey said he plans to have his son, Jory, manage the store after he graduates from the University of Maine at Farmington. The Humpherys also have a daughter, Bridget, attending UMF.
In the meantime, Humphrey and his wife will oversee the business that includes an agency liquor store, deli counter and bottle redemption center. Other than the name, the Humphreys aren’t planning any big changes right off. They’re even keeping the same telephone number, 882-4101, that people can call to order pizzas, sandwiches and other takeout items from the menu. The store’s hours will stay the same, too, at least through the winter, 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday. By summertime they hope to have Maxwell’s Market & Deli open seven days a week.
Humphrey said down the road he hopes to add gas pumps and begin selling both gasoline and diesel fuel. He also plans to expand the takeout menu and possibly include some breakfast items. He and his wife both said they couldn’t be happier with their purchase and becoming part of the Wiscasset business community.
Barnes said that he’s enjoyed managing the store but that it was time to move on. He said he believed the convenience store would be a really good investment for the Humphreys and wished them the very best of luck in their new venture. Both parties said they were happy with the transaction. The price wasn’t disclosed.
Barnes has managed the store for five years since the family purchased it in June 2010. Bill Barnes, Shawn Barnes’ father, is in Florida and wasn’t present for the closing on the sale.
The business had been closed and vacant for about a year before the Barnes family bought it. They spent most of a summer remodeling the building. The renovations included revamping the kitchen area and expanding the takeout menu, adding both hot and cold sandwiches and pizzas along with some grocery items and lottery tickets. The also added the bottle redemption center and ATM and became a deer-tagging location. Later the business became an agency liquor store.
Barnes plans to devote more time to his farm. He thanked his many customers who have patronized Mike’s Log Cabin over the years. He also thanked Sherri Dunbar of Tim Dunham Realty, the broker handling the transaction.
Mike’s Log Cabin Foods as it was first called has been a fixture on Route 27 since its namesake Mike Kelley of Pittston opened it in 1971. The convenience store’s sale on Monday follows the recent sale of another retail property in town. The Wiscasset Marketplace on Route 1 and home to six businesses sold Dec. 26.
