Saltwater Artists Gallery readies for the season
As the pace of life quickens on the Pemaquid peninsula with spring flowers and budding shiny new tree leaves in that very special shade of “green,” the artists of the Saltwater Artists Gallery have been busy the past two weekends sprucing up the building and grounds to welcome the summer visitors.
Local neighbors and those driving by have watched the gallery transformed with a new colorful metal roof graced by the addition of a wonderful copula topped with a Pemaquid Point themed weather vane.
In the spirit of cooperative membership that the nonprofit is noted for, the artists, both veteran and new this year, have joined together to rebuild parts of the building, scrape and paint parts of the exterior and interior, and improve the front gardens along with cutting and dispensing with major trees on the lot. Talk was even heard of “feng shui” in the remaking of an inviting entrance walkway.
One of the gallery’s long term members, Sandy Flint, is preparing to present his refreshing visions of life as seen through his lens. Flint has been creating images of the world around us for about 60 years.
Known locally as a bird watcher, Flint spent nearly two months last fall photographing Grizzly Bears in remote British Columbia. “The Matriarch” and others from that trip will be on display at Saltwater Artists Gallery this season.
Flint has been the recipient of many awards and his images have been published in several magazines including Popular Photography, Audubon, mostly recently viewed on Audubon On Line.
Flint believes in having control of the photographic process from the time the shutter is released to the final print; and therefore does all his own processing and printing using the finest 200-year archival paper and inks.
Almost 30 new and returning artists representing multiple 2-D mediums and the 3D mediums of jewelry, wood turning, stain glass and weaving will be joined by a surprise guest artist this season.
The gallery, located in New Harbor near the end of Route 130 just prior to the turn to Pemaquid Light Park, opened Memorial Day weekend. It will be open Friday through Sunday long until mid-June when the gallery will be open seven days a week.
