Scarecrows at story hour
“His eyes are borrowed buttons, his hands can be tin pan hands.”
We learned about many different ways the iconic fall figure, the scarecrow, can be created. The group at Story Hour this week read the books “Otis and the Scarecrow” by Loren Long and “Scarecrow” by Cynthia Rylant. The stories really did a great job demonstrating how creative the parts can be in making your own unique scarecrow this autumn.
When the stories were finished, all of the children raced outside into the crisp fall air and warm sunshine to build our own scarecrows that will stand in the Library Monarch Butterfly garden. We used burlap cloth heads with felt and yarn facial features. Second hand clothes stuffed with leaves created a realistic body steadied by a wooded stick. Everyone had a lot of fun with this seasonal craft.
Story hour is held every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Wiscasset Public Library Children’s Room. We are located at 21 High Street, Wiscasset. All good listeners are welcome to enjoy a few stories and an activity to follow.
