Scholastic Writing Award winners at the Center for Teaching & Learning
Local middle school students from the Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb were honored for their poetry in this year's Scholastic Writing Awards.
In the Maine Region, Carissa Fawber, eighth grade, received the contest's highest honor, a Gold Key. Maggie Larson, eighth grade, was honored with a Silver Key, and Kaleb Brackley-Prouty, seventh grade, received an honorable mention. These writers submitted three poems each, which were judged as a collection.
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the gold standard for recognizing the creative achievements of U.S. students in grades 7-12. The contest dates back to 1923. Past winners include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, John Updike, and many more. In the past five years alone, over 900,000 pieces of writing have been submitted.
Their accomplishments were celebrated in an award ceremony and reading at the University of Southern Maine, Portland campus, on Feb. 27. Congratulations, writers!
