School budget bid survives first test
Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit's proposed budget remained in tact following a district-wide meeting August 12, Superintendent Howard Tuttle said.
“A strong majority was in favor of the budget,” Tuttle said in a telephone interview later.
The meeting was a chance for residents from around the eight-town district to raise or lower parts of the proposal, before the package goes to referendum. But no changes were made, Tuttle said. So the budget voters will consider at the polls September 10 is the same as the district board proposed, including a 4.6 percent hike over last year's total tab to the towns.
Voters rejected an earlier budget offer.
“It was encouraging,” Tuttle said about the support shown at Monday's meeting at Whitefield Elementary School. He reiterated his hope for a good turnout in next month's referendum.
Wiscasset, Westport Island, Alna, Whitefield, Chelsea, Palermo, Somerville and Windsor make up the district.
