School budget passes narrowly
The Wiscasset school budget passed 300-287, an election official said at the Wiscasset Community Center on June 10.
“Thirteen is a lucky number,” School Committee Chairman Glen Craig said. “A win is a win is a win, as far as moving forward. It’s one more threshold, one more hurdle, and we can put it behind us,” Craig said in a telephone interview Tuesday night.
In other results, two former Wiscasset selectmen made it back onto the board and one incumbent was reelected.
Five candidates were seeking three selectmen’s seats. The top-three voter getters Tuesday were former selectmen Benjamin Rines Jr. and William Barnes, with 338 votes and 306 votes, respectively, and incumbent Jefferson Slack, with 292 votes, Town Clerk Christine Wolfe said.
Rines and Barnes said they wanted to thank their supporters. “I hope we can fulfill people’s expectations,” Barnes said.
“I think it will be a good year,” Rines said.
Incumbent Judith Colby received 283 votes and past selectman David Nichols, 190, Wolfe said.
Unopposed school committee candidate Michael Dunn got the one-year seat he was seeking, while Chelsea Haggett received 85 write-in votes for a three-year opening no one had turned in nomination papers for. Haggett had announced her candidacy as a write-in; as the top vote-getter among the write-ins, she will be offered the seat, Wolfe said.
Gregg Wood won a Water District trustee’s seat, and George Knight, with two write-ins, will be offered another trustee seat.
