Sheepscot Valley Children’s House brings special summer learning opportunities
This summer many Midcoast children have been enjoying the programs offered through Sheepscot Valley Children’s House in Wiscasset. The children have been exposed to several different learning opportunities from nature to music to animal care and gardening.
Sheepscot Valley Children’s House has partnered with Chewonki to bring nature-based learning to the summer program. In the first educational presentation, the children loved meeting the owls Chewonki brought to the school. The children learned how an owl’s facial disk helps them hear and listened to different owl calls.
Thanks to parent Danielle Clement, this summer the children have been learning about gardening and chicks. Together they have prepared, sowed, tended and look forward to harvesting a vegetable garden. Each day the children are excited to tend to the garden’s needs of weeding and watering. Danielle also brought in several chicks and taught the children how to care for the animals.
Toddler teacher Kristy Orr looks forward to these special learning extensions.
“Every week we work to create educational opportunities for the children who attend our summer program. By enriching these every day activities with programs like Chewonki and the gardening program, the children here are having a lot of fun too! The parents love hearing the great things their children learn each day,” said Orr.
Sheepscot Valley Children’s House is running its summer program through Aug. 19. The regular school year program is enrolling new students now. Sheepscot Valley Children’s House serves infant through kindergarten aged children. This year, the kindergarten program is planning on working within our community to expose children to volunteerism and leadership.
