People United Against Racism invites the public to a community book discussion on second and fourth Mondays in June, July, and August, starting June 11. The group will meet at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle at 5:15 p.m. and will be facilitated by Rev. Erika Hewitt, minister of the Midcoast Unitiarian Universalist Fellowship. Describing her approach, Rev. Erika says “We will engage, with curiosity and respect, in talking about race, racism, and white privilege.”

The group will be reading and discussing Ijeoma Oluo’s book, “So You Want to Talk About Race.” It was named “One of 10 Books to Read in 2018” by Harper’s Bazaar and is available for sale at Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop. The group will discuss the introduction and the first 3 chapters (pages 1 to 52) at the first meeting on June 11 and receive a schedule and outline of readings for the other five meetings, at that time.For more information email uumidcoast@gmail.com.

People United Against Racism are the organizers of the yearly Martin Luther King Day events in the twin villages and hold weekly anti-racism vigils every Monday in Newcastle’s Veterans Memorial Park, adjacent to the Second Congregational Church. The vigils have moved to summer hours, 4:30 to 5 p.m., rather than 12 to 12:30 p.m. when they met in winter and spring. The book discussion group will meet two Mondays a month immediately following the vigil’s new time and the public is invited to participate in either one or both.
