Special meeting tonight on cruiser
It looks like the June 18 special town meeting may not need to happen, after all. Wiscasset selectmen plan to meet tonight, June 6, to consider buying a used police cruiser with insurance money from the cruiser totaled last month.
Just two days ago, on June 4, the board made plans to ask voters for money to put with the $9,250 insurance payout. A new cruiser was projected to cost between $25,000 and $28,000.
But the situation has turned around.
Selectmen's Chairman Pam Dunning said Police Chief Troy Cline learned of a used police cruiser that wouldn't take property tax money to buy. The insurance money will cover the cost, Dunning said.
“It'll be quite a savings to the taxpayers, close to $19,000. It solves the problem and make the police department whole again,” she said. “It was very good news,” Dunning said about the used vehicle.
The board's approval of the purchase would also negate the need for a special town meeting and the expense that comes with it, Dunning said.
The department's fleet of two cruisers went down to one May 21, when the other was totaled in an accident.
Tonight's meeting starts at 5 p.m. in the municipal meeting room.
