'Spelling Bee' open casting call
The Waldo Theatre in Waldoboro has announced audition dates for its upcoming community theatre production of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," the Tony and Drama Desk Award winning musical comedy. Auditions for the show will be held at the theatre on Sunday afternoon, May 4 and the evening of Tuesday, May 6.
All members of the Midcoast community are invited to audition for one of 9 to 14 roles. No stage experience is required to audition, though most (but not all) roles require advanced singing capabilities for both solos and tight harmonies, as well as some physicality and basic dance movement skills.
"The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" will be directed at The Waldo by Soren Barker of Boothbay with choreography by Niall Lessard of Damariscotta. The show is being produced by George Bates of Waldoboro. Performances are scheduled for Sept. 6, 7, 12, 13, and 14.
“This show will be a blast for any comedic actor that enjoys fast-paced, smart and quirky humor,” said Barker. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to direct this fun show in the intimate and beautiful settingof The Waldo.”
The play focuses on an eclectic group of six “middle-schoolers” (each portrayed by adult actors) who will do anything it takes to be reigning champion of the bee, while revealing hilarious and often touching stories from their private lives.
“Any actor or artist who has performed on The Waldo stage will tell you what a special treat it is,” said Susan Hodder, The Waldo’s executive director. “This big show continues what is becoming a renaissance of live theatre here, and we couldn’t be more excited.”
