Spirit Challenge rounds the halfway mark
Teachers serving up fries at a local fast food restaurant and students serving up cocoa at Winterfest are part Wiscasset Middle High School’s all-out effort for a big second half in WGME’s Spirit Challenge food drive.
“We have been doing well in donations but we need much more than we have at this point to meet our goal for this challenge,” WMHS technology coordinator and student council adviser Deb Pooler said Sunday.
The school is trying to raise 70,000 pounds of food for Good Shepherd Food Bank. The 58,662 pounds the school raised in 2014 gave it the Spirit Cup then. And for the sake of the cup and the cause of stemming hunger in Maine, students, staff businesses and townspeople are trying for a repeat.
From 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, Wiscasset teachers will be working at the Wiscasset McDonald’s. The business will donate a portion of its sales during that time.
“We are looking out to the community to come and help us raise as much money as we can so our school can reach number one like they did two years ago,” Wiscasset McDonald’s General Manager Christie Owens writes in an email to the Wiscasset Newspaper.
Look for student council members at Wiscasset Parks and Recreation’s Winterfest on Saturday, Feb. 6. The students will put on games, cocoa and s’mores.
Also Saturday, a bake sale at Shaw’s will raise money for the food bank. Money goes further than food donations in the Spirit Challenge. The food bank can turn a dollar into five pounds of food.
In addition, Pooler noted that for every 5,000 pounds of food the school raises, a $400 credit will go on a local food bank’s account at Good Shepherd.
“Local businesses have been very generous in their donations so far,” Pooler said. “I am super proud of my community for coming together once again for the (contest). Not only does it show community strength, it shows how much this town supports the kids.”
Food donation boxes remain at WMHS, Wiscasset Elementary School, Ames Supply, Wiscasset Ford, Chewonki Foundation and Wiscasset Community Center, Pooler said. Or donate online at https://www.gsfb.org/donate/vfd/525.
The food drive ends Feb. 28.
