Spring auction: Worldly enticements, timeless temptations
The exciting collection of rarities in Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ spring auction June 1-3 are sure to tantalize and will lead bidders on a journey across continents and centuries. The auction will present fine art, estate jewelry, French furniture and accessories, Americana, Asian antiques, important ephemera, marine items, silver, antiquities, art pottery, high end electronics, and carpets.
Thomaston Place owner and auctioneer Kaja Veilleux noted: “We’re kicking off the season with a sale of incredible diversity that has the goods to tempt all manner of collectors and decorators.”
On Friday, June 1 the sale will feature carefully curated selections of specialized collector’s items, including rare books and documents, ethnographic artifacts, and a collection of custom made pool cues. Highlights from the ephemera group will be: a rare, first edition copy of “Gulliver’s Travels” from 1726, two Napoleon signed military orders, plus 21 lots of early maps, including pieces by Abraham Ortelius, Nicholas Sanson, and Willem Blaeu. From the ethnographic group will be a rare pre-contact Hawaiian Kou Umeke calabash poi bowl, a circa 1910-15 Navajo chief’s wearing blanket, and a Benin bronze standing leopard sculpture.
Saturday, June 2 the auction will feature outstanding artwork, including: a monumental painting titled “The Picnic” by Louis Jambor (NY/Hungary, 1884-1955); a portrait of the three-mast schooner “Marcus A. Davis” passing the Boston light by William Pierce Stubbs (MA/ME, 1842-1909); “La Place de la Republique”, depicting a Parisian winter scene by Eugene Galien-Laloue (France, 1854-1941); and an equestrian work by Scott Leighton (ME/CA, 1849-1898) titled “The Vanderbilt Family Racing Horses and Sleighs”. There will also be works by Theodore Wendel (MA/OH, 1850-1932), Antonio Jacobsen (NY/NJ, 1850-1921), Augustus Buhler (MA, 1853-1920), Charles Warren Eaton (NY/NJ, 1857-1937), and many others.
There will be a large selection of French furniture and accessories, led by a monumental pair of bronze 12-arm figural candelabra form electrified torchieres, an ornate and massive Louis XVI style marble top console table and mirror; and a three-piece fire gilt bronze and marble mantel clock garniture set. The Saturday sale will also offer a group of 17th Century oak and walnut furniture, such as an English carved walnut court cupboard, English plank elm trestle table, Continental carved walnut cassone, and a small, heavily carved walnut six-plank blanket chest .
As always, there will be an extensive Americana group, including: an 1824 New Hampshire double-sided tavern sign with Masonic insignia; a circa 1920 double-seater carousel horse by R.C. Williams Amusement Co., Denver, CO; a pair of Federal period gilded and black lacquered bull’s-eye mirrors with pagoda form finials; and a circa 1890-1910 Maine made folk art painted stepback cupboard featuring the story of Adam & Eve. There will also be a working pond model of the sailing yacht “Rogue” with a tag that indicates it was “Built by Bill Wadsworth, Camden, Maine, 1951.”
Important antiquities will be offered, such as a 12th Century Khmer sandstone deity sculpture, an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus funereal mask, and a carved marble portrait head of the Capitoline Aphrodite, possibly from the Grand Tour era.
The 195-lot Asian collection will feature a 17th-18th Century Tibetan gilded terra cotta Buddhist altar figure depicting the Dalai Lama, plus extensive selections of Asian bronzes, porcelain, textiles, and paintings.
On Sunday, June 3 the focus will be 20th century decorative arts and estate jewelry, featuring a round ideal cut 6.24-carat diamond with four prong platinum setting and full GIA certified documents, and an Art Deco platinum 10% iridium, diamond and emerald link bracelet. From the collection of fine watches will be a Van Cleef Cadenas gold and diamond ladies watch, an Asprey of London cased gold, enamel & lapis pocket watch with chatelaine, and an 18K gold & diamond ladies Rolex watch.
Sunday artwork will be led by a Harriet Frishmuth (NY/CT, 1880-1980) bronze spread-wing eagle sculpture, a marble bust of a young gypsy girl by Adolfo Cipriani (Italy, active 1880-1930), and a large oil painting titled “Mill Pond, Somesville” by Maine artist Paul Black (1951-2014).
Other highlights include: a late 19th Century broadside depicting San Francisco’s Sutro Baths; an Oscar Bach Art Deco relief decorated silvered bronze table lamp with marble pedestal; a pair of Red Rose Revelation Reference R-1 speakers in maple veneer cases by Mark Levinson; a Grueby art pottery scroll and leaf design vase in matte green glaze, and two large sets of Reed & Barton Francis I pattern sterling flatware..
Appropriate to a spring auction, there will be a nice selection of garden pieces, including two hand crafted concrete outdoor accessories by Eric Soderholtz (Sweden/ME, 1868-1959). Additionally, a group of Danish modern furnishings will be presented, along with fine custom furniture by Thomas Moser and a group of 19th and early 20th Century store display cases.
Finally, a Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic motorcycle, Winnebago motor home, and 1970s Lapstrake Rowboat by Cecil Burnham of South Bristol, ME will be offered.
