'Staying Found' and basic orienteering class in Damariscotta
The Damariscotta River Association (DRA) announced that on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon, Sarah Gladu, DRA education director will offer a program on “Staying Found” and basic orienteering.
Program participants will learn basic tips on how to avoid getting lost, reading maps and using a compass. Participants will practice using a compass and also follow a compass course to test their skills and find a “treasure.”
This program is suitable for anyone over age 9.
“Orienteering is a great skill for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and it is relevant both on land and on the water,” Gladu said. “Even in this era of GPS use, learning to use a compass is highly relevant.”
Compasses will be provided. Preregistration is required by Dec. 12. The program fee is $5 non-members and $2 for members. The class will be held at the DRA Salt Bay Farm at 110 Belvedere Road.
The Damariscotta River Association is a nonprofit, membership supported, and nationally accredited land trust dedicated to preserving and promoting the natural, cultural and historical heritage of the Damariscotta region, centered on the Damariscotta River.
