Steady turnout starts Wiscasset voting
An hour into Tuesday's voting at the Wiscasset Community Center, turnout had been pretty steady, Town Clerk Christine Wolfe said.
Shortly after 9 a.m., election workers said about 40 residents had been in to cast ballots so far.
Among residents interviewed outside the center after they voted, none said the question on whether or not to withdraw from Regional School Unit 12 was what drew them to the polls.
“Not at all. I'm an American citizen, exercising my rights,” Patsy Messier said.
Gordon Kontrath and his wife of 48 years, Lynne Kontrath, just moved here from New Jersey.
“We just wanted to get involved and vote,” Lynne Kontrath said.
In addition to the withdrawal question, Wiscasset voters today are considering funding sources for the withdrawal; they also face proposed new road standards and rules for adult entertainment businesses; and a loan to go with federal money for sewer work.
Polls remain open at the Community Center on Route 27 until 8 p.m.
