Steven R. Hasenfus
Steven R. Hasenfus, 61, passed away on July 21, 2020 at the Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center with friends and family by his side.
Born in Waterville, Maine, he was the eldest son of Walter and Rosalie Hasenfus. He earned his high school diploma from the Lyndon Institute in Vermont and studied liberal arts at Bangor Community College (now the University of Augusta - Bangor Campus).
He enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served honorably from 1976-1980, completing a tour in Germany as a cannon fire direction specialist in the 2/28 FA C Battery. After the Army, he entered the food service industry where he specialized in Chinese cuisine as an accomplished cook for over 30 years.
In his youth, Steve enjoyed skiing, boating, and art. Among his many art works, he was particularly fond of his introspective batik series (a style of canvas art created using wax and dye). Steve also had a lifelong appreciation for music, particularly classic rock, which he passed on to his two children.
Steve also enjoyed attending concerts, playing board games, and watching movies. His friends knew him as a vibrant, good-humored man with a tireless work ethic. His family knew him as an immensely proud father with a big heart.
Steve was predeceased by his parents and by his brother, Michael Hasenfus.
Surviving are his two children, son Nikolaus Hasenfus of Oroville, California and daughter Stephanie Hasenfus and husband Alex Brubaker of Tacoma, Washington. He is also survived by brother John Hasenfus and wife Patty of Hinesburg, Vermont; sister Mary Miller and husband Kevin of Boothbay Harbor; sister Andrea Perkins and husband Russell of Wiscasset; and many nieces and nephews.
The memorial service has been postponed due to COVID-19, but will be hosted by the family in the summer of 2021. For information on the service time and location, please visit https://www.gatheringus.com/memorial/steven-r-hasenfus/4710
